two figs, a double portrait

it seems that whenever I eat figs for breakfast, I can’t help but paint them. they are just so beautiful - especially when cut in half; the way that the sharpness of the cut form contrasts with the swirling, throbbing universe of seeds (and dead bee matter?) within it. all of that is encased in a velvety purple shell.

since I painted figs in my sketchbook, in gouache, a few weeks ago, I wanted to paint a more illustrative graphic rendition of these figs. something with a bit of a japanese woodblock print vibe? only a few colors. clean and sharp. printable on small postcard, or, idk, an oracle deck inspired by the geometry of mysterious, sensuous fruit.

PS. I suddenly remember where the visual inspiration came from. these japanese firework catalogue illustrations, from the public domain archive. I saw these a few months ago while looking at labyrinths, and they must have sprouted something in my mind.
