a year ago, i dreamed of having a garden with a house - (rather than a house with a garden)
these days, as i am increasingly bored and repelled by humans, i’ve been interested in deepening my relationship with animals and plants.
my home in istanbul is big enough to hold a thousand plants - and the more i reflect on it, the more i think i’m meant to build a “rooted space” (thank you my old friend karen for this word) - containing gardens which evoke other worlds, places, energies… while i allow myself to be a nomadic species, and go elsewhere for a few weeks or month at a time.

jotted notes of plant dreams
lotus
this is the flower of my hometown, and it requires a pond ecosystem. i want a lotus tattoo, and i want to give it to myself.
lemon
one summer, i drove along the boot of southern italy with a lover and dreamed of lemon trees. his best friend had a few lemon trees planted in his backyard at the birth of his daughter. we walked a long hiking trail “path of the gods” and sat to drink lemonade from a mountain man.
avocado
my ex-boyfriend’s mother grew an avocado tree out of a seed in their house. it’s the kind of thing mothers know how to do. she was like a mother to me.
gourd
one spring i spent with karen in japan, where her neighbor (we called him daikon dad) gave us a gourd plant to take care of. i became a gourd apprentice.
jasmine
there is a chinese song about jasmine - a flower reminds me of china.
osthmanus
also a flower that reminds me of my hometown, and my father, who always picked it.
