discovering yıldız park

istanbul diaries

the first time a friend took me to yildiz park — i couldn’t believe that a place like it existed in this city. there, the hills are uncut by stairs and buildings. they simply exist. the birds are so loud it’s like being in an arboretum. there, trees can breathe. i sit on a picnic bench (on the side of a hill, so slanted you cannot place a cup on its surface) and do nothing. just sit, and feel the force of gravity.

it’s a 25 minute (slow) walk from my house, and i think i would like to go there almost daily.
