I made these vessels to hold the beauty of winter. I bought this clay before christmas (six euros for ten kilos) a day before all the shops in berlin closed for lockdown — and the bag was labeled “rot” for red, but instead it is the true color of earth.

I made birds and tigers out of it. this week I made five vessels on the wheel. to hold these twigs I picked up off the ground. and at night they cast shadows on my wall.

how do I begin to describe the kind of pleasure looking at this gives me? the pleasure of making exquisite things from nature — earth, and dirt, and twigs. the pleasure of noticing. of seeing.

and why should summer and spring get all the attention? winter beauty is its own kind of beauty.
